 CREATE KARMA.
SAVE A LIFE.

Serving the needs of pets and their families is my life’s work. I founded KARMA Rescue in 2003, and since then, KARMA has grown from a traditional pet rescue adoption model into something greater: programs that tackle the systemic issues driving pets into shelters and euthanasia head on.

Our many years as an active member of L.A.’s animal welfare community have afforded us the ability to identify gaps in much-needed services, and take action. This is why KARMA shifted from a pet adoption service to a focus on ending animal overpopulation, programs that help keep animals with their families, and protect them from surrender to shelters and euthanasia.

In Los Angeles County, there is a scarcity of organizations equipped to assist low-income pet parents who want to have their pet spayed/neutered or whose pets desperately need other, unaffordable medical procedures. Low-income pet parents far too often face the heart wrenching decision of surrendering their pet to the shelter system or having to have their pet euthanized to avoid suffering. This unfortunate situation is termed “economic euthanasia,” and over half a million companion animals are euthanized each year in the United States simply because people cannot afford veterinary bills. KARMA is on a mission to do everything we can to help stop this tragic trend and keep pets healthy and in their homes with their families that love them.

Our relationships and research have shown that it is working class families who are most often forced into these impossible choices, so our work is in targeted zip codes in high-need areas of Los Angeles County that don’t receive the same attention or necessary resources as do other neighborhoods. KARMA programs now focus on prevention and intervention through education programs, our Get Fixed L.A. spay/neuter clinics, and our veterinary assistance program KARMA Care. For more on these programs, please visit our Programs page.

As one of the very few Los Angeles-based animal humane organizations in existence for nearly two decades, much of our growth has been accomplished by prioritizing engagement, flexibility, openness and transparency, leadership, communication, team alignment, and, always, focus on the mission. I would be remiss if I did not mention the hundreds of volunteers who have helped us serve animals and their families through the years. If you have a passion for animals and time to give, we would love to meet you! Visit our Volunteer page to sign up and connect with us.
